I am proud of my record as a strong supporter of animal rights efforts to end the abuse and exploitation of all creatures. During my career in Congress, I have introduced and cosponsored a number of bills on these issues, earning me the “Humane Legislator of the Year” award for work done to promote animal rights from the Humane Society of the United States.
Animals play important roles in so many of our lives and as our friends, they deserve our respect and humaneness. They deserve proper care and treatment always, not just when it’s convenient, and their value should not lie in their usefulness to us as scientific models or entertainment, but in their inherent worth as sentient creatures. That is why I am committed to closing puppy mills, phasing out the use of chimpanzees in invasive research, bringing about an end to organized animal fights by establishing penalties for attending and bringing children to them, improving living conditions for farm animals and prohibiting the slaughter of horses for human consumption.
