Private investment is a formidable economic presence in Latin America. Between 1995 and 2009, foreign direct investment in the region grew 295% from $29.5 billion to $116.6 billion. In the first half of 2012, venture capital and private equity investment in Latin America was $1.79 billion. Yet despite this influx of capital, Latin America has one of the highest levels of income inequality in the world and over 30% of the region's population still lives in poverty. It is timely now to examine impact investing -- how private investment can generate broad-based financial and social change in key sectors, including housing, education, and infrastructure.
