WASHINGTON, D.C. – Congressman Sam Farr (D-Carmel) tonight will host Nancy Sutley, chair of the White House Council on Environmental Quality. They will be participating in a forum to discuss ocean and coastal issues and President Obama's new National Ocean Policy. "I'm excited to have Nancy visit," Rep. Farr said. "It was in Monterey in 1998 that we hosted the National Ocean Conference, the event that really kick-started the push for an overhaul of our ocean management strategies. This year, Nancy was a key part in President Obama's executive order putting in place a National Ocean Policy, and it will be exciting to talk about these successes with her." President Obama established the "National Policy for the Stewardship of the Ocean, our Coasts, and Great Lakes" on July 19 via executive order. In addition to laying out the national policy, the executive order also created a National Ocean Council to strengthen ocean governance and coordination, established guiding principles for ocean management and adopted a flexible framework for effective coastal and marine spatial planning to address conservation, economic activity, user conflict and sustainable use of the ocean, our coasts and the Great Lakes. Tuesday, Sept. 7, 6-7:30 p.m. For more information on this event, contact Congressman Farr's district office at 831-424-2229. # # # |
