Rep. Farr Statement on House Passage of Bill to Cut NPR Funding PDF Print

Washington, DC Congressman Sam Farr (D-Carmel) today issued the following statement on the House passage of H.R. 1076, legislation that prohibits Federal funding of NPR and the use of Federal funds by public radio stations to acquire NPR programming. The bill passed by a vote of 228-192.

“I am disappointed that House Republicans have chosen to throw out the rules and pass legislation to cut funding to NPR, against the will of the majority of Americans.

Contrary to Republican rhetoric, this legislation does nothing to produce savings or reduce our national deficit. But it does directly attack the free flow of information, and closes the door on smart, educated programming that millions of American’s value and listen to on daily basis.

By prohibiting local public radio stations from purchasing NPR programming, this bill will force local stations, like KAZU and KUSP, to end programming that engages communities with thoughtful and unbiased information.

Today, Republicans have overreached, and placed a price on public radio without having a clue about its real value.”
