Statement: House Passage of Debt Ceiling Deal PDF Print

Washington, DC Congressman Sam Farr (D-Carmel) today released the following statement after the House of Representatives passed the debt ceiling package:

“While voting to increase the debt ceiling is a necessary step, the deficit reduction measures included in this deal unfairly place the burden on seniors and the middle class families. This is the wrong approach at a time that our economy is struggling to recover and families across our country continue to suffer from the lingering effects of the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression.

We all understand that we need to get our fiscal house in order, but developing good and sound fiscal policy while negotiating a ransom is not the way forward. This debate blurred the lines between meeting our financial obligations and the larger debate about setting our nation’s budget priorities.

The bottom line is this deal does not create jobs, and it does not provide the much needed support our economy needs. I am disappointed that this process was prioritized by political games, and not by the best interest of our nation.”
