Latin America on the Rise Briefing Series: The Energy Sector in Latin America - June 7th PDF Print

The Energy Sector in Latin America
Part of Congressman Farr’s Latin America on the Rise briefing series

10-11am, Thursday, June 7th
Congressional Meeting Room South
Capitol Visitors Center

The Western Hemisphere is emerging as a major player in US and global energy consumption:

  • About 52% of US oil imports come from the Western Hemisphere, compared with 22% from Middle Eastern states

  • 1/3 of the top 15 countries exporting oil to the US are in Latin America

  • The Western Hemisphere produces roughly 30% of the world’s natural gas and global electricity

With shifting political tensions in the Middle East, now is an opportune moment to explore the potential for regional energy cooperation and hemispheric energy independence. It is also important to address the security, environmental, and human rights dynamics of the Western Hemisphere’s energy sector.

At Thursday, June 7th at 10 am, Congressman Farr will host The Energy Sector in Latin America, a timely briefing to discuss the significant opportunities, complex challenges, and future possibilities that exist in our hemisphere’s amply resourced energy sector.

This program is the latest installment in a monthly briefing series called Latin America on the Rise, which brings in a diverse array of speakers to address emerging and emergent issues in the hemisphere.
